Loire Wine

Saumur is well known for its Saumur "Petillant" or sparkling white wine created by the "methode champenoise" and visits can be arranged to the various wineries in Saint Hilaire Saint Florent, a suburb of Saumur.

These include Ackerman, Bouvet Laudabay, Veuve Amiot (all located in the same road) and also Gratien & Meyer set high on the road between Saumur and Montsoreau.

If your preference is a drier white wine, then the Saumur Blanc would be good to sample. Try the Domaine de la Motte or Domaine de la Perruche at Montsoreau.

Red wine - you could not do better than to sample the Saumur Champigny. Good addresses are the Château du Hureau (Dampierre sur Loire) and the Chéteau de Villeneuve (Souzay Champigny).

You have a preference for a sweet wine, perhaps to go with your dessert or foie gras, then a Coteaux du Layon or a Bonnezeaux would fit the bill. Good addresses are Domaine Bodineau (Les Verchers sur Layon) which is just to the south of Saumur and Domaine de la Saugourde (also in Les Verchers sur Layon)

Without wishing to make you an alcoholic, don't forget the Cointreau Distillery in Angers which is also worth a visit!

Happy tasting!

Chateaux in the Loire Region

The term 'Loire valley' if used correctly could refer to an area of over 1000km as this is the length of the river from its source in the springs on the side of Mont Gerbier de Jonc in the southern Cevennes hills within the department of the Ardeche to its destination on the Atlantic coast at Nantes. It has however become synonymous with the area along the river Loire between Sully-sur-Loire in Loiret and Chalonnes-sur-Loire in Maine-et -Loire a distance of 280km. This became formalised with its inclusion on the list of world heritage sites in November 2000. It also takes in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park and the park at Chateau de Chambord.
